Avoiding air leakage is one of the most important ways to ensure the long-term health and performance of equipment. Therefore, it is a good idea to understand the most common way air enters the hydraulic system, so you can always pay attention to these areas.
1) Leakage of inlet pipeline
Leaking pipes are the most common and obvious culprits for getting air into the system. The pipes are flexible and may come loose if not properly maintained. In addition, poor quality pipes or improperly installed pipes can easily cause leakage. Threaded joints may be porous and must be secured with an approved pipe thread sealant. A damaged or scratched inlet flange surface (where the pipe fits into the pump) may also reduce the tightness of the pipe connection point.
2) Leakage system O-ring
O-ring degradation is another source of potential air. As O-rings degrade, they lose their elasticity and become hard, brittle, cracked and porous. As a result, they lose airtightness and eventually air gets into the system. On systems operating at high temperatures, the "O" ring will harden. The type of fluid is another factor contributing to O-ring degradation. Fluids with high sulfur content tend to accelerate the hardness of the O-ring. Pay close attention to the integrity of the O-ring and follow the recommended maintenance and replacement schedule. And take measures to keep the system operating temperature within the specified range.
3) Pump shaft seal leakage
The pump shaft seal is another point where air can enter the system. These seals are connected to the inlet of the pump, and because the pump creates a vacuum effect, if these seals are in poor condition, air can be sucked directly into the working parts of the pump. Inlet vacuum is too high will also lead to leakage at the shaft seal. In addition, shaft misalignment, improper installation or damage to the shaft seal during installation will increase the possibility of air leakage out of the shaft seal.
4) Leakage of cylinder rod seal
A rapidly moving cylinder may experience a large difference between positive and negative pressure, which can cause cavitation. In this case, a strong vacuum is generated, which is sometimes sufficient to suck the air (and dust) under the cylinder rod seal. Accordingly, some cylinders have an anti-cavitation check valve that allows hydraulic fluid from the tank to prevent cavitation if the pressure drops too low.
5) Turbulence or sloshing in the reservoir
Turbulence or sloshing in the reservoir may cause inflation. A moving vehicle driving on rough and uneven ground may cause the liquid in the oil to sway back and forth.
Reservoir. The water tank should be designed to be deep enough to reduce inflation due to shaking. In addition, if the return line is incorrectly located in the reservoir, this can cause turbulence when the fluid re-enters the reservoir, thereby increasing the amount of ventilation. The return line should be located below the liquid level to avoid the formation of air bubbles in the system.
6) Fluid in swirl reservoir
Sometimes, a poorly designed reservoir inlet can cause a suction vortex effect, similar to the vortex phenomenon seen when water flows from a drain. This is likely to cause the fluid to inflate. To avoid this, good design should ensure that the inlet protrudes from the reservoir wall.
7) Release air suspended in the fluid
When the hydraulic oil becomes cold, there is usually a large amount of air suspended in it. At startup, the fluid begins to warm up and air is released into the system. The drop in fluid pressure also triggers the release of levitation air. Therefore, the safety valve should be located below the liquid level of the reservoir and as far away from the outlet of the reservoir as possible. This allows time for the air released by the safety valve to be purged before it leaves the reservoir. A special baffle made of a 60-mesh screen can be installed into the container to help eliminate most larger bubbles.
Hydraulic charging is the enemy of performance and has a deteriorating effect on hydraulic pumps and other components. So avoid it at all costs. Make sure you know all the points where air may enter the system and pay attention to these areas. Please follow your prescribed maintenance procedures and be alert to symptoms of inflation, such as increased noise, increased heat, or irregular exercise.
